Things to Do in Mtskheta: Old Town, Churches and River Views

The main things to do in Mtskheta connect churches in the centre with Jvari above the rivers. Separate the town walk from the drives to outlying monasteries.

Things to do in Mtskheta: choose your route

The main things to do in Mtskheta are easier to arrange when you distinguish the town centre from the monasteries outside it. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Samtavro Monastery are in the centre, while Jvari stands on a rocky hill east of town. The Aragvi and Mtkvari meet here, giving the landscape a clear focus as well as providing the setting for the city's religious monuments.

Start with the cathedral and the surrounding paved streets if you want a town visit with churches, craft shopping and a meal. Add a separate journey to Jvari for the elevated view of the rivers. The UNESCO property comprises Jvari, Svetitskhoveli and Samtavro; the designation refers to these religious monuments and their protected surroundings rather than every street in the old town.

Churches with different roles

At Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, look at the cross-shaped building, high dome and surviving wall paintings. The present main building dates from the 11th century. Its religious traditions concern Christ's robe, Sidonia and a life-giving pillar; approach these as traditions attached to a place of worship rather than as a separate archaeological account.

Samtavro Monastery adds a different part of the story. This convent is associated with King Mirian and Queen Nana, whose tombs are in the main church. Its main church is also an 11th-century building. Moving between the cathedral and convent lets you compare two central religious places before taking on an outlying stop. Allow room in your plan for worship and follow instructions given at each site.

Jvari and the meeting of the rivers

The view from Jvari Monastery brings the town and the river junction into the same landscape. The church was built in 585 to 604 and has a tetraconch design with four apses. Its hilltop position is part of the appeal, but it also changes the transport plan: organise the monastery journey separately from your central walk. The getting-there guide explains the distinction between reaching Mtskheta and reaching the hillside monastery.

Teatroni provides a riverside point of interest within a town visit. Pair the river setting with the religious buildings if you want a change of focus between churches. A town walking tour offers another way to connect the cathedral surroundings and riverside context. Keep a town walk distinct from a countryside hike when choosing your programme.

Market streets and crafts

The streets leading towards the cathedral have craft sellers, souvenir shops, wine sales and restaurants. Make this part of the visit a stroll through the cathedral neighbourhood rather than an outing dependent on a particular market day. It works naturally between church visits and a meal, with time to look at the craft displays instead of treating the old town merely as a passage to the entrance.

For food, use the cathedral surroundings as a starting area and choose from what is available on the day. The useful distinction is between browsing independently and joining a product with a specified tasting. Shopping streets alone do not tell you what an excursion includes. The outing shown here combines Mtskheta with other stops and includes an air-conditioned vehicle; choose it for a wider route rather than a dedicated market visit.

Armazi and the Samtavro burial ground

Mtskheta's archaeological story extends beyond the standing churches. The Greater Mtskheta archaeological museum-reserve includes Armaztsikhe, Armaziskhevi, the Samtavro necropolis and a mausoleum tomb, with objects from different periods in its collection. The burial ground is a separate archaeological site, not another name for Samtavro's convent. Arrange any museum or excavation visit around the current arrangements for the particular place, rather than applying church visiting information to an archaeological site.

Shio Mghvime and the surrounding countryside

Shio Mghvime is another monastery near Mtskheta, founded in the 6th century by Shio, who came from Syria. Its name recalls his cave, while the complex also contains churches from different building phases. It is a monastery visit reached by a separate car or taxi journey. The private-tour options include a route with this additional stop.

For hiking, look beyond the old town towards the surrounding countryside, including the Saguramo area. Plan that as its own outdoor activity with attention to the route and conditions. Walking between city sights and visiting a monastery with cave associations are different activities from a countryside hike or a tourist cave tour.

Questions about your visit

Which sights belong to the UNESCO property?

Jvari, Svetitskhoveli and Samtavro are its three components. The old town provides their urban setting but is not a fourth component.

Can I treat every stop as one town walk?

Keep the central cathedral and convent together, and arrange separate transport for Jvari and Shio Mghvime.

Is Samtavro the same as the burial ground?

The convent and the Samtavro necropolis are distinct places. Choose the religious site or archaeological visit according to your interests.
